The Tale of Despereaux is one of the latest contenders in the burgeoning computer animated film industry and this first release in the category for universal pictures is a stunning visual adventure. The animation team, including Oliver Adam, manages to portray a fantastic universe in stunning artistic detail that thoroughly engages audiences.

This movie is based off of a book that readers will enjoy just as much (maybe even better). The cast includes Dustin Hoffman, Emma Watson and Tracy Ullman among others. Despereaux is also the mouse who is the hero of the story.

The film begins with Roscuro the rat (Dustin Hoffman) who inevitably causes some rat-like mischief at the eagerly anticipated soup day in the kingdom of Dor. The residents of Dor love their soup but due to Rosucros antics, which cause the queen to unexpectedly expire, the king of Dor banishes rats and soup from the kingdom forever. Enter Despereaux, the unlikely mouse hero whose courage and bravery are out of sync with the rest of the mousy community.

Despereaux is an adventurer who is unafraid to tread where mouse and rat usually dare not go and who becomes enchanted with the charming princess pea but is eventually thrown out as an outcast due to his maverick ways and is forced to join the exiled ratworld where he teams up with the rat rebel Roscuro and goes on to rescue the princess and save the day. The DVD release of the Tale of Despereaux will feature some new material that fans will find engaging. Behind the scenes pieces and examinations of sources for some of the material in the movie provide a deeper background for fans, especially those who may not be familiar with the details of the book.

There are games, songs and deleted scenes on the extras to enjoy. The blu-ray version is sharp and it is sure to be a delight and great addition to any movie collection.
