Sadhya: heal the world, make it a better place
While most of us actively engage ourselves in discussions of global warming and its effects, how many of us have really made an effort to make a difference? Well this is a question that should inevitably haunt us because the situation is indeed getting from bad to worse and each one of us, educated individuals, need to start the healing process right away! Sadhya, a contemporary performing arts unit, has taken up the responsibility of spreading messages of awareness with their exclusive form of dance. Under the able guidance of its creative director Santosh Nair, who is trained in both traditional and contemporary dance forms, Sadhya presented their dance production 'We can make a Difference' last evening in the Indian Habitat Centre, New Delhi.
This production combines contemporary dance forms to showcase the destruction of nature and the sufferings with which the world is paying back today for its greed. The unique dance form of Sadhya forms its basis on the traditional Mayurbhanj Chhau--a martial art form of Orissa. With this art form as its foundation, Santosh Nair has discovered a style of his own which retains the versatility and energy of Chhau and has blended it with modern dance forms.
The result was an extra ordinary art form, priding itself in pure artistry and creative brilliance! Sadhya has worked on numerous projects in and out of the country since its inception and has now achieved international recognition and acceptance. The production, started with an Audio Visual on global warming. The clipping used was thought provoking and set the perfect mood for the show to begin. As the dancers took to the stage, they pleasantly surprised the audience with their deft and skillful moves, postures and technique.
The story began with the dancers depicting the pure and innocent nature co-existing with the human world in perfect harmony. Birds, fishes, flowers, rivers, mountains; all lapping up the true essence of existence. Then came man and the machine to demolish this peaceful and serene environment by cutting down trees, polluting the rivers, killing animals for their selfish needs of a bourgeoisie life. In this particular piece the boys did a phenomenal piece--almost robotic and mechanical in their moves.
The coordination among the dancers, the technique and the adept story telling evoked splendid reactions from the audience. This piece seamlessly went on to the next one where the dancers depicted symbolically the fruits of the destruction that man has been enjoying. Building factories, offices, technical gadgets, clothes and shoes from the animal skin man is happy and getting more greedy. And then the inevitable-'global warming.
Accompanied with brilliant music by Upamanyu Bhanot and costumes, the dancers illustrated pollution, floods, earthquakes wars and the likes. A solo piece by Tushar Kalia, a senior dancer, choreographer and trainer at the institute is worth mentioning. One could see easily how his style matches up to international levels of acclaim and acceptance. The solo led to the last piece of the evening which signified hope for the human society to meet these threats and challenges. Sadhya's production 'We Can Make a Difference' on the whole was a great success with all the dancers communicating their talent and message with honesty and true artistry.
